A set of 20 blueprints for the Liberty 1, aka "Icarus," from the production of Franklin J. Schaffner's Planet of the Apes. The American National Space Administration (ANSA) spaceship Liberty 1 - known presciently as the Icarus by its crew, including lead astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) - traveled 1,000 years into the future and crash-landed on an Earth dominated by super-intelligent apes.
The Icarus was designed by production designer Bill Creber and set designer Holdereed Maxy based on original designs for the McDonnell Douglas Winged Gemini reentry module. To bring the now-classic vessel to life, both full-size and model miniature versions were constructed for production and reused in later films in the franchise, including Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
These 20 blueprints copied from the production originals originates from the collection of master model maker Greg Jein, who worked on the original Icarus models. The set depicts bird's eye, side, interior, front, and bottom views of the vessel, including several featuring earlier names for the vessel, such as "Sparrow III" and "Orion 3." They come printed on a variety of drafting paper, including some labeled for the production, and feature both printed and, in one case, handwritten annotations regarding the size, shape, and component parts of the Liberty 1. The blueprints exhibit curled edges and discoloration from age. Dimensions: (largest) 36" x 25" (91.5 cm x 63.5 cm)
Estimate: $1,500 - 3,000
