A screen-matched Globey (George McGrath) animatronic puppet from Season 1 of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Globey, one of the resident puppets of the titular playhouse, helped Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) learn about geography and similar topics throughout the series. Alignments in the pinstripes, blemishing, and particular brushstrokes in the paint screen-match this Globey to Season 1 of the series, after which the character underwent a drastic redesign for Seasons 2 through 5.
Following the success of Paul Reubens' Pee-Wee Herman stage show and first theatrical venture, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, CBS approved a Saturday morning children's television series starring Reubens as Herman. Reubens produced the series and co-directed many episodes. Reubens assembled an all-star team of up-and-coming actors, artists, puppeteers, animators, and musicians to define the groundbreaking series. Pee-Wee's Playhouse went on to win 15 Emmys® throughout its run.
This puppet, designed to resemble an anthropomorphized desk globe of the planet Earth, is made of foam rubber over a thin fiberglass form with acrylic eyes and an internal metal frame housing the mechanical and electronic elements that once operated the animatronic face. It features painted blue oceans with green and brown foam continents, and is covered with a grid made of applied black tape. An opening on the back allows access to the interior. The head is mounted to a metal pole that fits into a resin base painted gold-color with foam-filled arms and hands. The piece has undergone minor restoration and stabilization, but still exhibits some wear from use and age, including hardening and cracking to the foam, missing eyebrows, paint chipping to the base, and staining to the arms and hands. Any currently-remaining functionality to the animatronics remains untested. Dimensions: 18" x 16" x 20" (45.75 cm x 40.75 cm x 51 cm)
Contains electronic and mechanical components; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.
Estimate: $6,000 - 12,000
