A Shatterdome Maintenance Robot from Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 mega monster movie Pacific Rim. In the film, a race of monsters, called ‘Kaiju,’ terrorize earth, so humans build a team of massive robots, called ‘Jaegers,’ to battle the monsters and save the world. The Shatterdome is the Jaeger hub, and near the beginning of the film, tools such as this maintenance droid can be seen in the giant hangar of the Hong Kong Shatterdome. This droid is made of pieces of high density urethane formed into the shape of the tool, then painted a dark green. The droid has a circular dome shape and features six legs, three protruding from each side of a slot near the base of the tool. These legs can be moved back and forth but do not have a mechanism to make them walk automatically. The arm that extends from the tool has a clamp that can be opened and closed. The hollow interior holds electronics that control the lights—two yellow lights on the extended arm, and a light that shines through slots on either side of the droid. These lights are controlled by switches on the base of the droid and are powered by four D batteries. The electronics cannot be confirmed to be in working order. This tool was distressed for the production and has some wear due to storage. It is in overall good condition. This piece measures 25” x 20” x 20” ( 64 cm x 51 cm x 51 cm).
