A Mechanical Kaiju Skinmite from Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 mega monster movie Pacific Rim. In the film, a race of monsters, called ‘Kaiju,’ terrorize earth, so humans build a team of massive robots, called ‘Jaegers,’ to battle the monsters and save the world. When Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and Hannibal Chau (Ron Perlman) visit the carcass of a fallen Kaiju, this little bug can be seen wiggling and squirming as a scavenger grabs it from the Kaiju skin and places it in a box.

This fully mechanical skinmite features a segmented shell made of vacu-formed plastic painted a light tan with black and brown spots. The face is made of light foam with five eyes and four pincers, all hardened by a clear laminate. The sixteen legs are made of the same light foam as the head, also painted tan with black spots and hardened by clear laminate. The abdomen is made of foam latex painted with pink details and black spots. Inside the abdomen are the mechanics, which cause the bug to curl its body in and out while moving its legs. The electronics are accessed by a switch inside a balloon under the back segment of the shell. These electronics cannot be confirmed to be in working order. This skinmite shows minor wear due to production use and storage but remains in excellent condition. This piece measures 19” x 12” x 8” (48 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm).
