Bidding for this lot will end on Friday, October 24th. The auction will begin closing at 3:00PM BST (7:00AM PDT) and lots are sold sequentially via timed auction at 1 minute intervals. Note other lots in the auction may close on Thursday, October 23rd.
A DW chrome-finish drum kit used by Zak Starkey in the music video for Oasis' 2005 single "Lyla", with additional drums and components used for performances with various artists. This lot comes from the personal collection of English drummer Zak Starkey, whos worked with Oasis, The Who, Johnny Marr and more.
Starkey used components from this set for two different drum kits. The smaller kit (comprising four drums) was used during his time touring with Oasis in 2004, including their show at The Lighthouse, Poole on 23 June and their Glastonbury festival performance on 25 June. These were Starkeys first two shows playing as part of the band. Starkey also played this kit on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2007, performing the song "This Old Town" with Paul Weller, Graham Coxon and bassist Mani.
Its most notable use was in the "Lyla" music video, with an Oasis logo drumhead created specifically for that shoot. The video follows the character Lyla (Katrine De Candole), who is transported into an extravagant masquerade-style party where Oasis perform on stage. The party has a fantastical Alice in Wonderland theme and is influenced by The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus. In behind-the-scenes footage, Noel Gallagher says, "We had nothing to do with the concept, apart from designing the front drum skin and fairy lights, which is always my idea."
Starkey used a larger kit (comprising eight drums) for touring with The Who, playing it for the first time with them in 2002, and Johnny Marr & The Healers for their six month tour in 2003. Some appearances that featured the kit include The Healers performance of "The Last Ride" on the David Letterman Show in 2003, of "Down on the Corner" on Craig Kilborn's The Late Late Show in 2003, and in footage of the band at the Shinjuku Liquid Room in Tokyo, March 2003.
The "Lyla" kit comprises an "Oasis" logo bass drum; a floor tom; a mounted tom drum; a floor tom drum; a snare drum; a high-hat cymbal with stand and pedal; three cymbals with stands; a DW 5000 series bass-drum pedal; and a Zildjian-branded rug. The bass drumhead features a colourful "Oasis" logo printed on a yellow-striped background, with additional text reading "Rock 'N' Roll, Pop 'N' Soul". All the drums are DW-branded drums, and display a chrome finish.
The additional items in this lot, used for Starkey's larger kit, include a DW-logo bass drum; two tom drums; a snare drum; a cymbal with stand; a tom-drum mount; six coated Remo drumheads; two bass-drum pedals; 21 assorted cymbals; and a spare stall stand. The components come in various boxes and protective bags, with "Zak S" written on several of them in black ink. There are minor marks and scuffing on the drums chrome finish, and the drumheads and cymbals exhibit general wear from use. One of the cymbal bags has a hole, so care should be taken when handling it. Dimensions ("Lyla" kit assembled): 136 cm x 199 cm x 121 cm (53.5" x 78.25" x 47.5"); (Oasis bass drum): 53 cm x 65 cm x 65 cm (20.75" x 25.5" x 25.5")
Additional Provenance:
The following eight lots come from the personal collection of British drummer Zak Starkey, who had an illustrious career working with many artists, including The Who, Oasis, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, Johnny Marr & The Healers, and The Lightning Seeds. Starkey's introduction to drumming began at the age of eight when he was gifted a kit by his godfather, The Who's drummer, Keith Moon (a close friend of Starkey's father, Ringo Starr), and he began to teach himself how to play.
During the 1980s, Starkey joined a re-formed Spencer Davis Group for a brief stint, toured with Ringo Starr and the All-Starr Band, and played on the protest song "Sun City" by Artists United Against Apartheid alongside an array of well-known musicians. He was also a founding member of John Entwistle's band The Rock from 1985-1987, recording drums for their only studio album, The Rock. Other highlights from his career include working with The Icicle Works in 1988 after Chris Sharrock (former drummer for Oasis) left the band, touring with Roger Daltrey and Jake Entwistle in 1994, playing with Mike Scott in 1997, drumming for Paul Weller and Graham Coxon in 2007, playing with Mick Jones of The Clash in 2011 and drumming with Jeff Beck and Debbie Harry in 2011.
One of his most notable credits is his time as a touring guest drummer for Oasis, working with them between 2004 and 2009. He also played the drums on all the tracks on their albums Dig Out Your Soul and Don't Believe the Truth. But it is perhaps his work with The Who that he is best known for, playing with them from 1996 until 2025. Not only has he had an impressive career as a drummer, but Starkey was also awarded a Grammy in 2021 for Best Reggae Album for his work co-producing, arranging and playing guitar on Got to be Tough by Toots and the Maytals.
Starkey is currently working on remastering some of Ringo Starr's solo work and creating new material for the star-studded ensemble Mantra of the Cosmos, a supergroup formed in 2023 that includes Shaun Ryder and Bez of the Happy Mondays, and Andy Bell of Ride, Oasis and Beady Eye.
