A mummification head appliance and production bust from the action-adventure film The Mummy. Presented with an ancient puzzle box, librarian Evy (Rachel Weisz) seeks out Foreign Legion adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) to guide them to the lost city of Hamunaptra. Followed by another group of treasure hunters, they race to the city, not realising the fate of those who attempt to awaken the damned sorcerer Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) and befall the mummy’s curse.
This bandage appliance was used for the scene in which the high priest Imhotep was condemned to be buried alive with scarabs in a cursed execution called the Hom Dai. The piece is fixed in shape and fastens at the back with a long strip of Velcro, with two slits to see out from and the ‘final’ bandage to be applied in the mummification process left loose so it could be draped over the actor’s face repeatedly for various takes. The bandages have been yellowed and aged for use with some additional distressing to fit the ancient Egyptian aesthetic of the film. The piece is presented on an original production plaster bust of Arnold Vosloo which is covered in paint and black marker pen lines made during the costume design process. Displaying some minor additional wear from use, the heavy and fairly fragile bust remains in very good condition.
