A rare pair of original production storyboard drawings featuring caricatured versions of Laurel and Hardy, created for Walt Disney's 1938 Silly Symphony short Mother Goose Goes to Hollywood.
These expressive storyboards capture the slapstick energy of the sequence (and their characters) in which Hardy's proud stack of pies meets an inevitable end, while Laurel's nonchalance delivers the perfect comic punctuation.
Rendered in graphite and coloured pencil on animation storyboard paper, with visible pinholes from studio use, the drawings display the lively linework and intuitive humour that characterised Disney's story department during the Golden Age. Each composition conveys timing, weight and expression with economy and charm, the essence of pre-war animation craft.
Mother Goose Goes to Hollywood, directed by Wilfred Jackson and released by RKO Radio Pictures in December 1938, parodied contemporary Hollywood figures through nursery-rhyme caricature. Produced as one of the final Silly Symphonies, it remains celebrated for its playful satire and beautifully fluid design.
Wonderful examples of Disney's pre-production artistry, these sheets survive as authentic artefacts of the studio's early storyboarding process where animation, caricature and cinematic staging first met on paper. Dimensions (each): 23 cm x 19.75 cm (9" x 7.75")
