An original production cel of Quatre Raberba Winner in the cockpit of Gundam Sandrock, on a hand-painted master production background, from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing episode 44, "Go Forth, Gundam Team," Sunrise, 1995.
The extreme close-up says everything. Quatre, the gentlest of the five Gundam pilots, the one whose empathy made him both the team's conscience and its most psychologically vulnerable member, caught in a moment of pure alarm. The dark pilot suit with its red trim collar identifies him precisely within the series' late arc, the Zero Pilot Suit worn during the Peacemillion operations as the Eve Wars approached. Catalogued in online collector archives as A9 Oversize, production codes 188 and A1 confirm this as the primary cel layer from cut 188 of the episode.
Episode 44 is a turning point for Quatre. Having experienced the ZERO System's devastating psychological effects firsthand in episodes 25 and 26, where it pushed him to complete breakdown, he now faces the consequences of Heero's decision to install it in Sandrock without his consent.
The cel captures that moment of hesitation: the weight of what the system had already cost him set against the demand to take command of the Gundam team into one of the series' largest battles against OZ's mobile dolls. That he overcomes that fear is one of his defining moments in the series.
Quatre Raberba Winner was unlike the other four pilots in ways that went beyond personality. His name, derived from the French word for four, followed the numerical naming convention running across the pilot roster. His "heart of outer space," an extrasensory empathy connecting him to the suffering of those around him, set him further apart still.
Where the others operated largely alone, Quatre commanded the Maganac Corps, a force of forty pilots who served effectively as his private army and whose loyalty to him was absolute. Western audiences discovering Gundam Wing on Toonami found in Quatre the emotional entry point the series needed.
2026 marks the thirty-first anniversary of Gundam Wing's original broadcast. Original cel art of the five Gundam pilots on hand-painted production backgrounds has become genuinely scarce. This piece has been in private hands since leaving Sunrise and in perfect condition.
