An original pan layout drawing featuring Mickey Mouse and Peg-Leg Pete used in the making of the 1935 black-and-white short Mickey's Service Station.
Mickey's Service Station is a key entry in the early Disney catalogue, the 74th Mickey Mouse short, and the final black-and-white appearance for Donald, Goofy, and Pete. It marks the end of an era, just before Disney transitioned into full-colour animation.
Layout drawings like this are essential artefacts of the filmmaking process, the backbone of any scene, and were used to plan character movement, camera action, and spatial composition before a single cel was painted. This outstanding piece of pre-production animation history captures the moment just before Pete grabs Mickey and shoves him into his car, a scene loaded with comic menace and visual energy.
Pete is shown mid-action, puffing on his cigar, his guns menacingly tucked into his belt (although, in the short, his pistols were kept beneath his coat). Mickey, meanwhile, is apprehensive and defensive, about to be overpowered.
Rendered in graphite and red pencil, this layout includes classic animator's notations and red-line overlays marking the field guide and camera pan movement, guiding both the scene's framing and the dynamic motion of the characters.
