A custom-made black sequin jacket previously owned and worn by Michael Jackson. The pop star originally wore this jacket in 1986 while meeting with production and tour manager Benny Collins at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, to discuss his Bad Tour. During his career, Collins worked with several established music artists including the Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2 and Journey. He worked with Jackson from 1984 to 1994 on several tours and live performances.
Jackson originally gifted this jacket to Collins, who planned to donate it to a charity auction. However, the event did not happen, so Collins later donated the garment to an NICU charity auction in 2008. Jackson was known for his distinctive fashion choices, with much of his wardrobe being custom-made, and his clothing pieces are highly desired by collectors.
This jacket was created by famous fashion designer Bill Whitten, who frequently collaborated with the "King of Pop", creating some of his most recognisable clothing pieces, including his infamous rhinestone glove and crystal-encrusted socks.
The black sequin jacket features decorative gold-coloured metal dome buttons, a brooch attached to the left chest, a gold-coloured braided rope attached to the left shoulder, and red satin sleeve cuffs. Hook-and-eye fastenings run down the front and a Bill Whitten label is sewn to the lining of the jacket. There are some minor marks on the lining and small loose threads on the exterior. The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed at the bottom by Collins, which explains the jacket's history on MJJ Productions headed paper, and is dated "08/22/2008".
Estimate: £20,000 - 40,000 M
