A custom military-style jacket previously owned and worn by Michael Jackson. The singer/songwriter was highly aware of the power of visual identity and deliberately curated and accumulated an unconventional look, producing a distinctively standout wardrobe. His style is globally recognised, with several signature pieces forming his trademark style.

Jackson gifted this jacket in 1983 to his longtime head of security Bill Bray, a trusted member of his inner circle who was often described as both a close advisor and a father figure. Jackson frequently entrusted Bray with personal items, leaving clothing with him in cars or hotels, or gifting him pieces directly.

The military jacket became one of Jackson's most iconic stylistic signatures, inspired by his fascination with British and military history. Fellow performer Adam Ant once recalled receiving a phone call from Jackson enquiring about the origins of Ant's Kings of the Wild Frontier hussar jacket, which Ant sourced from renowned costumiers Bermans & Nathans. Jackson's interest in theatrical military dress was further influenced by his lifelong love of Disney fairy tales and pageantry.

Created by an unknown maker, this cropped black woollen jacket features a stand-up collar and a gold-coloured braided rope affixed to the left shoulder. Orange braiding decorates the collar, epaulettes and sleeves, with a matching orange-coloured lapel on one side. The front is fitted with 13 gold-coloured metal-ball buttons, with additional buttons sewn onto the collar and sleeves. A "Michael Jackson" label is sewn into the interior. There is wear to the top of the collar, where the lining has come undone, causing some fraying, and the jacket displays some minor loose threads.

The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity, signed by Bray's wife, which explains the jacket's history.
