Shylock’s (Al Pacino) cloak and tunic from Michael Radford’s 2004 Shakespeare adaptation The Merchant of Venice.

In 16th century Venice, a merchant defaults on a large loan from a victimised Jewish moneylender, who then demands a gruesome payment instead.

As Shylock is one of the main characters in story this costume features heavily. It consists of a large black cloak with a woven, multi-coloured lining covered in a black mesh, and a predominantly red, button-up tunic. Inside both items of clothing is a label from the costumiers Angels, who provided the costumes for the film. ‘Al Pacino’ is handwritten on both labels and as they were made for him in the film they do not have any other sizes listed.

Both pieces have some minor wear from production use and age, with a few pieces of thread having come loose on some seams and the mesh around the lining on the cloak having come away slightly in some places. Despite this the items remains in a very good, production-used condition.
