Trinity's (Carrie-Anne Moss) Matrix overcoat and corset from the Wachowskis' The Matrix. Trinity wore her signature overcoat and corset through much of the film's now-classic second act, first donning them when she and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) entered The Matrix to escort Neo (Keanu Reeves) to his meeting with the Oracle (Gloria Foster) and continuing to wear them in various stages of dress throughout the subsequent chase after Cypher (Joe Pantoliano) betrayed her and the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar to Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving).
Trinity's unforgettable all-black ensembles - with their sharp, stark contrasts to the more utilitarian-style clothing she wore in the robot-controlled "real world" - were designed by renowned costume designer Kym Barrett and Emmy Award®-winning costume illustrator Lois DeArmond. Barrett's team treated the fearsome warrior's costumes with a polyurethane laminate to add a distinctive, shiny leather-like sheen. Trinity's resulting look - with its fusion of traditional superhero iconography and futuristic punk aesthetics as embodied by her second act ensemble - is among the most recognizable and imitated of 1990s and Y2K-era pop culture. This costume is one of the few Trinity costumes from the first groundbreaking movie in private hands.
Propstore originally obtained this rare costume from the Warner Bros Archives in the late 2000s. It consists of a three-quarter-length denim-blend overcoat with a fastening clip closure, vertical striping on front, a standing collar, a microphone pocket, and two-tone satin lining with a tag hand-marked "Trinity" on the interior shoulder, as well as a matching corset with a lace-up closure, metal rivets on each side, striped paneling, and a tag hand-marked "Trinity" on the interior.
In the years following production, the majority of Trinity's high-gloss ensembles deteriorated with age. This overcoat originally featured a glossy polyurethane coating, but as the coating began to deteriorate, the coat was subsequently washed to remove the deteriorating finish. While the overcoat's original lamination is no longer present, it may be possible to simulate its original glossy look through additional treatment to the fabric. It also exhibits staining and grime from production wear. The corset largely retains its original shiny coating with some flaking on the interior and exterior.
Estimate: $10,000 - 20,000
