Beth Johanssen's (Kate Mara) stunt Martian surface suit from Ridley Scott's sci-fi film The Martian. Johanssen and her fellow Ares III crew members wore their surface suits when they lost Mark Watney (Matt Damon) in a severe dust storm whilst heading towards the Mars Ascent Vehicle after evacuating their mission. Costume designer Janty Yates worked extensively with NASA officials, researchers and engineers to ensure the film's space suits were as realistic as possible.
The costume comprises a custom-made orange, white and black neoprene suit; a separate rubber collar section; a pair of Pamela Woods gloves; and two pairs of orange and white resin boot attachments attached to neoprene strips with adhered Velcro. Completing the lot is a wrist computer component containing a fully functioning iPod (labelled "Vogel Stunt"). Several detailed metal and resin components and valves decorate the suit, and "Ares III" is printed on the front. A zip fastening runs down the back, and "Stunt Casey M" is handwritten inside the suit near the zip Casey Michaels was Mara's stunt double. The suit exhibits some marks from dust remnants from use in desert filming locations, and there are two intentional splits on one side of the suit's waist.
