Sauron's (Sala Baker) helmet from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Sauron, the sorcerer and necromancer responsible for creating the One Ring, wore his imposing signature war helm during the Siege of Barad-dur, the last great battle, in which Isildur of Gondor (Harry Sinclair) severed the Ring from Sauron's hand. Without the Ring, Sauron's spirit fled and he was defeated, leaving behind his smoldering helmet. Many moons later, Elves and Men formed the Last Alliance to wage a multiple-year war against the Dark Lord as he once again sought domination over Middle-earth.
Considered one of the greatest fantasy films ever created, The Fellowship of the Ring won four Academy Awards® and an additional 94 awards from other organizations. Sauron was one of only three characters (including Gandalf [Ian McKellen] and Galadriel [Cate Blanchett]) to appear in all six films comprising both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. While he later appeared as an all-seeing Eye overlooking Mordor, the Dark Lord's corporeal state is today synonymous in the public consciousness with his fearsome spiked helmet.
Created by the artists at Weta Workshop in New Zealand under the direction of multi-Academy Award®-winner Richard Taylor, this original lightweight helmet was later issued to United Cutlery as a reference for licensed replicas. It is constructed from urethane with rubber detailing and leather lining. It is further detailed with filigree designed and painted in shades of black and silver-color with an iridescent blue sheen. Production purposely distressed this helmet to appear battle-damaged and scorched by Sauron's body. The helmet exhibits chipped paint and bent ends from handling. Dimensions: 11" x 13" x 24.25" (28 cm x 33 cm x 61.5 cm)
Estimate: $70,000 - 140,000
