”Goodnight, nobody.”
An EVA helmet from Daniel Espinosa’s 2017 sci-fi horror Life.
On board the International Space Station a six-person crew discovers a Martian life form that they name ‘Calvin’. Evolving at an accelerated pace, Calvin turns out to be the cause of planetary extinction on Mars – and now threatens life on Earth.
Crew members wore their EVA suits and helmets in several scenes – Rory Adams (Ryan Reynolds) was seen suiting up at the start of the film as the team prepare to capture the unmanned Pilgrim 7 space probe. Later, mission commander Ekaterina Golovkina (Olga Dykhovichnaya) carried out a spacewalk in her EVA suit to fix the overheating communications system and was attacked by Calvin.
This is one of several such helmets made for the production.
The helmet features a rigid moulded ABS plastic frame closely overlaid with white canvas-like material, which extends from the top front to the base of the back. Metal fixtures house lights and other electrical components, with a visor adjustment dial on either side. The spherical visor is made from clear plastic and features a metal and plastic socket at the lower left corner.
Mounted on a custom black display base marked with the film title and featuring a clear plastic support ring, the helmet has a small switch at the rear that allows for illumination – there is another red switch at the base of the display for this purpose. It is powered by three AA batteries.
The helmet displays slight production-based discolouration, intended to convey a used appearance. The visor is slightly loose within the frame, an intentionally flexible design. Overall the piece remains in excellent condition and is stored within a royal blue padded and zippered bag.
Materials: ABS Plastic, Acrylic, Ferrous Metals, Man-Made Woven Fibres, Electronic Components.
