A special effects katana used in Edward Zwick’s epic The Last Samurai. Captured by the army of samurai general and feudal lord Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), American cavalry officer Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) finds himself immersed in the ways of the remote Satsuma samurai. Learning much about his enemy, Algren soon sides with the samurai in their war against the Imperial Japanese Army, knowing that to do so means almost certain death.
This sword and others like it were used by Algren in the film to simulate stab wounds as Algren fought in the film’s climactic battle. The piece is made of resin and urethane and features a partial inscription, the complete version reading “I belong to the warrior in whom the old ways have joined the new.” Due to a mistake during the creation of the swords, the inscription on the blade is cast upside-down. Swords with the upside-down inscription were seen in action sequences during the film’s climactic battle. The blade is finished in faux-silver paint with a simulated hamon temper line, with the grip painted black and white.

The blade has been cut for special effects use and the piece displays signs of natural wear including minor wear and chips in the paint finish. However, in spite of this wear, the sword remains in overall very good condition.
