The flag pole used in the action drama The Last Samurai. This flag can be seen at the beginning of the film during The Battle of the Fog when Nathan (Tom Cruise) defends himself by grabbing the pole off a horseman and swiping at the sword wielding warriors before it is cut in half by The Red Warrior. The centre section of the flagpole is made from a different material which is designed to break when struck with a sword; as seen in the film. There is glue on the exposed ends of wood from the break, indicating the flagpole was glued back together for re-takes on set. The pole, which holds the flag emblazoned with the white tiger emblem of Katsumoto, also has raised red ornate sections and a fake blade at the tip which is painted silver. The section holding the flag measures 122cm (48”) long, the other length measures 123cm (48.5").
