A screen-matched Slim Klown mask from Stephen Chiodo's Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Slim and his fellow extraterrestrial creatures, all resembling clowns with large monstrous heads, descended on the town of Crescent Cove, California to harvest the locals' blood. Slim - the most frequently seen Klown in the film - was considered one of the main antagonists and a step above most of his Klown brethren. This mask screen-matches to shots of him terrorizing Crescent Cove.
Produced by director Stephen Chiodo with his brothers, Charles and Edward, all experts in special effects, the cult classic horror-comedy film was celebrated for its groundbreaking practical effects, most famously the animatronic costumes that brought the Klowns to life on screen. The Chiodos conceived the Klowns from the unsettling idea that one of the scariest things imaginable would be glancing over while driving down a dark highway and seeing a clown in the next car, an image they later recreated in the film with Slim. Among the various Klowns, Slim stood out for both his design and his prominence, and this screen-matched mask is believed to be the only one created for the character.
This foam latex head mask display was purchased directly from the Chiodos. Fabricated by the brothers for use during filming, the piece is constructed from foam latex with a Velcro fastening strip closure at the back, allowing it to be worn by a performer. It is painted with white skin and colorful clown makeup, and features detailed eyes with green irises, a round red nose, gnarled yellow teeth, orange hair tipped with small red balls, and a permanently mounted display base dressed in silken fabric around the neck to enhance presentation. The interior includes mechanical cabling that originally enabled limited movement while the mask was worn, though these cables were cut following production. The mechanism suggests Slim's mask was part of the film's innovative approach to practical effects, incorporating basic performer-driven animation into the foam structure. The mask exhibits some expected signs of aging, including minor discoloration, cracking, and stiffening to the foam latex. The hair was recently restyled for display but may become matted again during transit. The mask's foam latex is now fairly rigid and should be handled with caution. Dimensions: 17" x 16" x 23" (43.25 cm x 40.75 cm x 58.5 cm)
Estimate: $25,000 - 50,000
