A screen-matched Shorty Klown head from Stephen Chiodo's Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Shorty and his fellow extraterrestrial creatures all resembled clowns with large monstrous heads and descended on the town of Crescent Cove, California to terrorize the locals and harvest their blood. In one of his most memorable scenes, Shirt knocked a guy's head off with boxing gloves. Visible deformities on the bridge of this head's nose, as well as its original paintwork, screen-match to when Shorty rode his tricycle into a group of oblivious bikers.
Produced by director Stephen Chiodo with his brothers, Charles and Edward, all experts in special effects, the cult classic horror-comedy film was celebrated for its groundbreaking practical effects, most famously the animatronic costumes that brought the Klowns to life on screen. The Chiodos conceived the Klowns from the unsettling idea that one of the scariest things imaginable would be glancing over while driving down a dark highway and seeing a clown in the next car.
Among the various Klowns, Shorty - so named for being the smallest of the Klowns seen onscreen - stood out for both his design and his deadliness, and this screen-matched mask is believed to be the only one created for the character. Shorty has since been immortalized in various costumes, toys, and other merchandise.
This head mask display was purchased directly from the Chiodos. Fabricated by the brothers for use during filming, it is constructed from foam latex painted with white skin, colorful clown makeup, and hand-punched bright, wildly-styled hair. It comes permanently mounted to a display base dressed in silken fabric around the neck to enhance presentation.
The mask exhibits some expected signs of aging, including minor discoloration, cracking, and stiffening to the foam latex. The foam latex is now fairly rigid and should be handled with caution. Dimensions: 15" x 17" x 25.5" (38.25 cm x 43.25 cm x 65 cm)
Estimate: $25,000 - 50,000
