A superb original production cel of Kiki and Tombo from Hayao Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service. This feature was the first Studio Ghibli film to substantially succeed on its initial theatrical release, grossing ¥4.3 billion in Japan in 1989. It remains the entry point through which many Western audiences encountered Ghibli at all, first through the Disney distribution deal in the late nineties, and then through every subsequent generation who found it on streaming. Miyazaki adapted Eiko Kadono's 1985 novel of the same name, adding scenes that the book never contained. This moment with Kiki and Tombo one of those additions.
The scene at approximately 1:13:40 is one of the film's most quietly painful. Tombo's friends arrive and invite him to tour the airship, and when he tries to introduce Kiki, the group's social hierarchy reasserts itself almost immediately. The Madam's granddaughter identifies Kiki as someone with a job, said in a tone that manages to be both a compliment and a dismissal, and Kiki, rather than stand her ground, turns and walks home. Tombo on the left, Kiki on the right, the space between them doing all the dramatic work. Both figures are painted on a single acetate cel, registered with top peg holes and annotated C6 and B6 in the upper corners. There is minor paint loss at the edge of Kiki's right sleeve, but the cel is otherwise in genuinely impressive condition.
The cel is paired with a fine art giclée background that contextualises the figures within the scene. Dimensions: 38 cm x 24 cm (14.96" x 9.45")
