Two original production cels from Hayao Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), capturing the pivotal scene at timecode 01:03:10 and 01:03:21 in which Osono comes to her room to check on her, while Kiki lies feverish in bed.
Both cels are painted on acetate with top peg registration and are presented here with fine art giclée backgrounds. Each fills its field generously: Kiki occupies the full width of her cel, the damp cloth on her head and the blanket bunched in her fists animated on the same layer so they move with her in the scene. The Osono cel is similarly scaled, her upright confidence as a counterweight to the prone, vulnerable Kiki on the other cel.
Osono is one of the production's most affectionately drawn supporting characters. Appearing briefly in Eiko Kadono's 1985 source novel, Miyazaki expanded her role deliberately, using her warmth as the emotional anchor Kiki needs during her crisis of confidence. The scene these cels document is a small one, but it carries real weight: it is the point at which adult steadiness holds space for a thirteen-year-old who has temporarily lost faith in herself.
Paired lots of this kind are exceptionally scarce, let alone two from sequential scenes. Scene partners almost always dispersed separately once production wrapped. For both sheets from this specific exchange to have remained together through decades in private hands is genuinely unusual. The condition throughout is outstanding.
