A superb original production cel with Key Master background from Hayao Miyazaki's 1989 masterwork, Kiki's Delivery Service. Ursula waves to Kiki from the roadside as Kiki rides away in a neighbour's car, still without her powers, unsure whether they will return.

This lot is a genuine rarity, and the configuration is worth understanding properly. The hand-painted key master production background is the element that lifts this lot into a different category entirely. Key master backgrounds are the originals, and they are, by definition, singular. The foreground foliage strip is a Book cel, a separate layer that is placed onto the primary cel during photography, allowing the camera to place Kiki and the car at mid-distance with lush vegetation in the near foreground, giving the shot depth that a single flat layer could not achieve. To have both the character and vehicle cel and the foreground extension survive together is something that should not be taken for granted.

Condition is good throughout, with minor line fading on Kiki and the vehicle that is entirely consistent with thirty-five years of natural acetate age. The background retains full saturation throughout, and the foreground foliage extension is clean.

This is an opportunity to acquire a matched set comprising the original key master background, the book cel, and the production cels together from Kiki's Delivery Service.
