A Jumanji "Version 1" gameboard faceplate from Joe Johnston's Jumanji. In the film, Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), Sarah Whittle (Bonnie Hunt), Judy Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst), and Peter Shepherd (Bradley Pierce) played a mysterious but dangerous magic game called Jumanji, which featured interactions with real-life crazed hunter Van Pelt (Jonathan Hyde) and other dangerous creatures.
During pre-production, faceplates for the Jumanji gameboard were sculpted, cast, and installed in each corner with the likenesses of the fearsome characters that emerged from the game into the real world of the film, including a monkey, a rhinoceros, an elephant, and Van Pelt. When the original performer cast to play Van Pelt dropped out just before principal photography, resculpts of the crazed hunter as portrayed by Hyde were quickly cast and rushed to the set in New England for filming.
While only the faceplates featuring Van Pelt's likeness as portrayed by Hyde were ultimately used in Johnston's film, the original gameboard faceplates - known as the "Version 1" style - later appeared in Jake Kasdan's sequel Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, as seen in the screen captures provided with this listing. While unconfirmed, it is believed that actor Tim Curry was the original basis for the Van Pelt likeness featured in this faceplate.
Jumanji was nominated for 11 awards, with Bonnie Hunt winning a Saturn Award® for Best Supporting Actress and Best Special Effects to Stan Parks, a Huabiao Film Award for Outstanding Translated Foreign Film, and a Young Artists Award for Best Family Feature Action-Adventure. It is today regarded as a classic of the 1990s, having spawned an expansive franchise including its two film sequels and a real-world board game.
This cast resin faceplate is engraved with decorative jungle and mountain motifs engraved, hand-painted to appear wooden, and intentionally distressed by production to appear aged and worn. It exhibits chipped paint, exposed resin, and adhesive marks on its backing. Dimensions: 35.75 cm x 28 cm x 0.75 cm (14" x 11" x 0.25")
Estimate: £3,500 - 7,000 Ω
