A matted layout drawing of Bruce the Shark hand-drawn for the production of Steven Spielberg's Jaws. Police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), oceanographer Matt Brody (Richard Dreyfuss), and shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) teamed up to take down the gargantuan Great White terrorizing Amity Island.
The iconic shark was brought to life with a combination of partial fish bodies and complex, life-size animatronics which proved famously finicky during the film's ocean sequences. During production, the crew nicknamed the shark "Bruce" after Spielberg's similarly temperamental lawyer.
Ultimately, Jaws became the highest-grossing film in history upon its 1975 release - the first to surpass $100 million - and established the foundation of the modern summer blockbuster. Ranked by the American Film Institute among the Top 50 American films of all time, it remains one of cinema's most influential works.
This layout drawing for one of the large-scale animatronics originates from Planet Hollywood. It is believed to have been rendered in graphite on paper by production designer Joseph "Joe" Alves Jr.'s team, and possibly Alves himself. The drawing is labeled "Void" in red ink and comes framed with matteboard. The paper shows evidence of wear consistent with handling and age. Dimensions: 30.75" x 23.5" (77.75 cm x 59.75 cm)
