ILM’s model sequences were inter cut with the live action sequences to form the famous scene. This particular cart is not as detailed as others because it is a stunt version and is not seen close up by the camera. The model barrels were used in the background on the miniature set.
The model pieces are made from plastic and have been painted and distressed to match the full sized versions. The model stunt cart has been constructed to appear as though it has been damaged from flying into track supports. One of the two barrels has a hole in either end and models like these can be seen in "From Star Wars To Indiana Jones, The Best Of The LucasFilm Archives" book.
The miniature lantern is in a noticeably larger scale, and is a modified pencil sharpener made from metal with a plastic dome covering the mini bulb. It has been painted in various shades of brown to appear aged. Additionally, the piece features a small knob at the base.
These items were originally obtained from a former Industrial Light and Magic employee who was heavily involved in the filming of the mine cart chase sequence. He was allowed to keep this crashed cart and other miniatures as mementos of his time working on the film.
The mine cart measures approximately 4.5" x 3" x 2" (12cm x 8cm x 5cm) while the lantern measures 4” x 2” (10cm x 5cm). The barrels when one is placed on top of the other measure 9" (23cm) in height. These items show some wear from age, but are in otherwise good production used condition.
This item comes with a Prop Store Certificate of Authenticity.
