Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and Henry Jones' (Sean Connery) photo-matched 1940s motorcycle with sidecar from Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. After he rescued his father from Castle Brunwald in Austria, Indiana Jones hijacked a motorcycle and its sidecar to flee the Nazis with his professor father. Later, while driving to the border, they were again ruthlessly pursued by more Nazis, culminating in a German being knocked off his bike by a flagpole to the wheel.
Multiple period motorcycles were used during filming of the chase, which was one of the final sequences completed for the film near Mount Tamalpais in Northern California. Unique paint and wear markings on the bodies of this 1940s Neval motorcycle and sidecar photo-match to multiple shots of Ford and Connery, most notably including shots of the German motorcyclist popping his front wheel onto the Joneses' bike, as well as to behind-the-scenes stills from production. It is also believed to have been used for trailing-behind shots.
Dressed to resemble a WWII-era military BMW R75, this nonfunctional motorcycle was painted by production with spray-painted white markings added. The motorcycle and sidecar are both made predominately of metal with rubber tubes and rubber-covered wiring. Following production, it underwent minor modifications for use on modern roads, including the addition of a new speedometer cluster, a large running light installed where the passenger side fender had been, a new brake light on the main rear tire cover, a new second seat on the motorcycle, and a new rear spare tire. The license plate previously mounted to its front wheel cover during filming is no longer present. The motorcycle comes without keys and exhibits chipped paint, cut tubing, and a build-up of grime.
The motorcycle and sidecar chase in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is one of the film's most memorable action scenes. Taking place just after Indiana rescues his father from the Nazis, the sequence combines fast-paced stunts, humor, and character development. Shot with practical effects and real vehicles, the scene reflects the hands-on filmmaking style that defines the Indiana Jones series. This photo-matched and instantly recognizable vehicle offers a connection to a classic moment in adventure movie history, and to two of cinema's most iconic characters.
