A plaster head created by legendary makeup effects artist Dick Smith for Miriam Blaylock's (Catherine Deneuve) vampire death makeup from the production of Tony Scott's The Hunger. In the climactic finale, Miriam's seemingly eternal beauty transformed to decrepitude as she suffered the same rapid aging fate as her mummified partner John (David Bowie).
Smith cast this head to propose a more demonic look for the dying Blaylock and hand-painted it to represent the first stage of her death, though director Scott ultimately opted for her to descend into the more shriveled, mummified appearance seen in the final cut. For his work on the film, Smith received a prestigious Saturn Award® nomination for Best Make-Up.
This head originates from the collection of Smith. It is hand-painted in shades of pale brown and gray and features glossy yellow eyes, an open piriform aperture in place of a nose, and large pointed teeth in its open mouth. The back of the head is embedded with a small length of rope. The head shows evidence of wear consistent with handling and age, including chips in the paint and plaster.
