Two original artworks from U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" (1995), the live action and animated Batman Forever music video that defined the fusion of rock music and comic-book spectacle in the 1990s.
Directed by Kevin Godley and animation directed by Shaun Magher at Manga Studios, the video reimagined Bono's onstage alter-egos, The Fly and MacPhisto, within a surreal Gotham City, balancing theatrical excess and graphic invention in perfect sync with U2's Zoo TV-era identity.
This pair of production artworks showcases both the technical craftsmanship and visual poetry that made the video so striking. The first, a key master setup from Section 15, Shot 5, presents MacPhisto's flying car hurtling through Gotham's skyline with the Bat-Jet in pursuit. The hand-painted cel sits over its original background, a breathtaking urban scape rendered in angular perspective and bold architectural geometry. The result is a complete work of art in its own right, cinematic, painterly, and alive with movement.
The second, from Section 4, Shot 4, is a hand-drawn and coloured comic-panel background with its original cel mask, depicting chaos and destruction across four sequential frames. The composition, filled with dynamic linework and expressive lettering, echoes the graphic immediacy of a vintage comic book brought vividly to life.
Both artworks are visually spectacular, their energy and design language immediately identifiable to anyone familiar with U2's creative peak or Batman's visual evolution. Together, they encapsulate a unique moment where music, animation, and mythology collided, the convergence of 1990s pop culture at its most audacious. Individually, each stands as a complete artwork, a testament to the era's hand-crafted animation and an unrepeatable chapter in both U2 and Batman history. Dimensions (largest): 27 cm x 38 cm (10.5" x 15")
