A make-up test drawing of John Hurt from the production John Cimino’s 1980 historical drama, Heaven’s Gate. Set in 1890, this film tells the story of the Johnson County War of Wyoming in which an affluent sheriff attempted to protect the rights of immigrant farmers who were being persecuted by wealthy cattle companies. Drawings like this were created for the makeup artists for reference.

Hand drawn with graphite on a sheet of white paper, this sketch is done in Hurt’s likeness for his role as William C. Irvine. While it does not display an artist’s signature, the bottom left of the page features a small imprint of a hand which is barely visible.

While the page shows various creases and small stains, this item remains in good overall condition.
