Danny Zuko's (John Travolta) "Greased Lightnin'" T-Birds jacket from Randal Kleiser's Grease. Danny wore his jacket during the dance daydream sequence in "Greased Lightnin'." In the song, Danny convinced the rest of the T-Birds that the used battered car (nicknamed Greased Lightnin') Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) bought could be modified to be race-worthy and catch the ladies' attention.
Forty-seven years after its initial release in June 1978, Grease remains one of the most popular musical films ever, with the soundtrack becoming one of the world's best-selling albums. In the original stage production of Grease, Kenickie sang the lead in "Greased Lightnin' "; however, Danny performed the number in the movie as Travolta expressed his desire for his character to sing the number.
Created by renowned costume designer Albert Wolsky, the costumes within Grease have remained iconic, having an enormous impact on fashion and pop culture. All five members of the T-Birds greaser gang sported their trademark customized leather jackets, which exuded their rebellious nature, throughout the film as part of their "uniform". This particular jacket is made from a different material, and this style was only worn during "Greased Lightnin'." Travolta also wore his T-Birds jacket, believed to be either this exact jacket or an identical version to the film's premiere.
The biker-style jacket is made of a black nylon-blend fabric with chunky silver-color metal zippers and snap fastenings. The back is decorated with the text "T Birds" and a bird emblem, both finished in silver-color glitter. A Controneo Costume label is sewn onto the lining and displays typed text reading "John Travolta." The lot remains in overall very good condition considering its age, with small loose threads and small patches of the glitter finish having come away over time.
Additional Provenance: This costume was sold in Christie's Film and Television Memorabilia auction in December 1995.
Estimate: $100,000 - 200,000
