”I'll blow a hole in your face then go inside and sleep like a baby.”
Walt Kowalski's (Clint Eastwood) hero U.S. M1 Garand rifle from Eastwood’s acclaimed 2008 drama Gran Torino. The film received numerous accolades including a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Original Song (Eastwood/Jamie Cullum), an AARP nomination for Best Actor (Eastwood) and an AFI, USA award for Movie of the Year.
After catching his neighbour Thao (Bee Vang) attempting to steal his beloved 1972 Gran Torino, Korean war veteran Kowalski forms an unlikely bond with his teenage Hmong neighbour. As he seeks to reform the youngster, he helps protect Thao’s family from the gangs that invade their neighbourhood.
This hero rifle was used heavily throughout the film and its promotion. The gun appeared on the movie poster, during the scene in which Walt chased Thao out of his garage and in the iconic “get off my lawn” scene where Walt saved Thao from Spider (Doua Moua) and his gang. Walt kept the gun propped up against the stove in his kitchen – later on he cleaned it there in preparation for his final confrontation with the gang.
Weighing 4.3 kg, the decommissione rifle features a solid wooden butt, stock and barrel. The bolt, loading mechanism and trigger are all made from steel, with steel support rings around the stock and barrel. The muzzle section is all steel, complete with a sight at the end. A dull olive green mesh fabric strap is attach to designated rings on the butt and midway up the stock.
Well-used during production, this Garand rifle displays minor wear as expected from natural ageing and storage. There are scratches, marks and light discolouration to the wood and metal, including the aforementioned dent. However, despite these factors, it remains in excellent overall condition and is an exciting piece used by one of the world’s most iconic faces in a much-lauded film.
Materials: Ferrous Metals, Wood, Man-Made Woven Fibres.
