Carly Beth Caldwell's (Kathryn Long) haunted mask from Goosebumps. In the Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2 "The Haunted Mask: Part I" and "The Haunted Mask: Part II," Carly Beth found the perfect mask to scare her bullies with, but after she put it on, discovered it was cursed and that it began to permanently meld with her body.
Based on R. L. Stine's best-selling book series of the same name, Goosebumps was a well-received adaptation as the videos were some of the best-selling after release. Ron Stefaniuk and Alan Doucette designed the props for production, including the monsters. After the show's cancellation, Stefaniuk kept most of the props.
Sculpted by Mathew Dewilde with input from Stefaniuk, this mask is believed to be one of seven made for the episode. It is made of foam latex that is split up the back and comes mounted to a painted Styrofoam head with a black elastic strap on a brown display base. Originally painted a pale flesh tone with purple, maroon, and black details, green paint was increasingly added as the mask began to take over Carly Beth. A combination of PAX paint and rubber mask grease paint were used to give the mask the "wet" look that Stefaniuk had asked for. The edge of this mask remained untrimmed, as compared to other masks that were trimmed to blend in more readily and appear to be merging with the actor's skin. The bottom of the head features a hand-written "1" in blue ink, with Dewilde writing in the included letter that "the number 1 mask was the main hero head." After production, the mask was treated with a layer of matte varnish. This lot exhibits cracks and flaked foam from age and exposure to direct sunlight. The foam's fragility, which has also caused it to adhere to the head, should be handled with care. Dimensions: 9" x 9" x 16" (23 cm x 23 cm x 40.75)
Additional Provenance: Hand-written Letter of Authenticity from prosthetic sculptor Mathew Dewilde.
Estimate: $5,000 - 10,000
