One-Eyed Willy's cutlass wielded by Sloth (John Matuszak) from Richard Donner's action adventure The Goonies. Made for the production but ultimately not seen on screen, One-Eyed Willy's cutlass was to be used by Sloth in a daring rescue attempt onboard the pirate's ship, The Inferno. The sword was used by Sloth's stunt double, Randell Dennis Widner, during rehearsals for the unrealised sequence in which Sloth duelled with Jake Fratelli (Robert Davi) as the Goonies escaped to safety. This sword originally came from Widner's personal collection.
The Goonies remains one of the most eminent American cult movies of the 1980s, and was chosen by the National Film Preservation Board for the National Film Registry in 2017. To this day, it is referenced and enjoyed across generations, particularly inspiring the hugely successful TV series Stranger Things. Many of the child actors cast in this classic went on to become stars in adulthood, such as Josh Brolin, Sean Astin and Ke Huy Quan.
Made by prop master Erik Nelson, the sword is composed of aluminium, featuring a curved blade, cupped guard, and a grip wrapped in leather cord. The blade's edge exhibits numerous dents from use in rehearsals, during which it repeatedly broke the Fratellis' swords, which contributed to the scene being scrapped.
The lot is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes photograph showing Sloth using the sword during a fight rehearsal. Dimensions: 98 cm x 17 cm x 12 cm (38.5" x 6.75" x 4.75")
Edged, bladed or blunt object; see notice on blades in the Buyer's Guide.
Estimate: £40,000 - 80,000 M
