Rhett Butler's (Clark Gable) polka dot ascot from Victor Fleming's Gone with the Wind with a Clark Gable caricature bust. Butler wore ascots as part of his signature look to sell his stylishness and distinctive appearance. He wore several variations of polka dot ascots, including when he returned from Paris to give Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) a new hat; when he played with his newborn daughter (Kelly Griffin/Greg Giese); and when he returned home from London with his daughter to greet Scarlett.
When it was released, Gone with the Wind won a record-breaking eight of its 13 Academy Award® nominations. It is today regarded amongst the most historic and acclaimed films ever made, with Butler considered Gable's signature character.
This distinctive, hand-woven navy blue ascot with white polka dots originated from the collection of the Annenberg family, who gifted it to Bill Fischler for display in his famous Patrick's Roadhouse diner in Santa Monica. The diner - named for Fischler's son, character actor Patrick Fischler - was well-known to California locals and tourists for exhibiting Hollywood memorabilia for a clientele of well-known celebrity guests, including Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. After Bill Fischler's death in 1997, the ascot passed into his family's possession.
Also included is a caricature bust of Gable not pictured with the lot. The ascot exhibits discoloration and small tears throughout from age and handling, while the bust exhibits some chipping and adhesive residue on the bottom. Dimensions: (bust) 9" x 9" x 11" (23 cm x 23 cm x 28 cm)
Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000
