One Sheet (27" x 41"); Roadshow Style CF
Fine+ on Linen; Artwork by Armando Seguso
MGM, 1939
This highly acclaimed movie was released in late December 1939 and initially shown in a limited engagement with higher-priced tickets, complete with an overture and intermission. In early 1940, the film was distributed for a wide release with lower ticket prices. The posters created for the first showing in 1939 and early 1940 are referred to as Roadshow posters, which do not include any wording about "back at regular prices," unlike the standard release posters that appeared from 1940 onward. Of the five style one sheets produced for the Roadshow this is considered one of the more rare.
Rhett Butler romances the headstrong Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara in David O. Selznick's lavish adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's tale of the Old South. This one sheet, released for the initial roadshow release, features a floral border and shows signs of wear, including small tears, paper loss, and creases. Professionally linen-backed, it includes expert touch-ups near the folds and to a flower in the upper right corner. The upper and lower right fields and the borders have sporadic airbrushing. This sought-after roadshow release showcases stunning images of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
This epic Civil War romance faced significant production challenges but ultimately won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Victor Fleming, and Best Supporting Actress for Hattie McDaniel, who became the first African-American to win an Academy Award. The film also became the highest-grossing film in history when adjusted for inflation.
Estimate: $5,000 - 10,000
