A matte painting of Dana Barrett's (Sigourney Weaver) apartment building with Gozer temple hand-painted by chief matte painter Matthew Yuricich for Ivan Reitman's Ghostbusters. This aerial shot featured just before Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) first visited Dana's apartment to investigate the ghost she encountered.
Yuricich - the recipient of a Special Academy Award® for his groundbreaking effects work on Logan's Run - created paintings for the film with the assistance of Michele Moen and Disney veteran Deno Ganakes under Richard Edlund's BOSS Film Studios. Michelle Moen is quoted as saying "We worked together in much the similar manner as the renaissance master painter and his workshop of apprentices". The painting has a delicate palate of colour, with the intention of leaving the eye unable to determine what is painted and what is photographed.
This particular shot of the 550 Central Park West building, skyline, and street was achieved using a large format photograph, taken on a high optics Hasselblad still camera from a helicopter, with Yuricich seamlessly extending the building and adding the story-specific Gozer temple via his painting. The Gozer temple was the site of the film's climactic finale; visible in the artwork are the large gold doors that opened to reveal the steps to Gozer, and even the stone terror dog gargoyle statues. The piece was deliberately left in a square format, as the final shot consisted of a slow push-in and tilt-up. The image comes mounted on a large masonite board, with black-painted paper backing added to each side of the image. There are several strips of black tape adhered to the board. The lot exhibits scuffs, minor marks, and the paper backing has begun to peel away in places. Dimensions: (framed) 34" x 76.25" x 0.25" (86.5 cm x 193.5 cm x 0.75 cm)
