A set of original designs for the BSA artwork which decorated the La Rocka leather jacket famously worn by George Michael in the music video for his number-one hit single "Faith." Founded in 1979/1980, La Rocka produced clothing inspired by the 1950s rocker aesthetic and became a label worn by numerous celebrities throughout the 1980s and '90s. The inspiration for the design of this jacket was BSA (Birmingham Small Arms Company Ltd) motorcycles and Triumph motorcycles.

This lot originates from the personal collection of British fashion designer and La Rocka founder Lloyd Johnson. It provides rare insight into the creation of one of Michael's most recognisable garments, showcasing the distinctive text and graphic motifs that appeared on what is now known as the "Faith" jacket (see Lot 125). The iconic music video marked a major shift in both Michael's musical direction and his visual style, following his time in the pop duo Wham!

The BSA artwork jackets formed part of a small limited run sold at La Rocka's boutique on Chelsea's King's Road, a destination frequently visited by celebrities and stylists, - including Michael's personal stylist Alan Keyes. Johnson had collaborated with designer Russell Tate to develop the distinctive BSA and "Rocker's Revenge" lettering. Their process involved Johnson presenting his concepts to Tate, who produced the layouts and colour schemes. In a recent email to Johnson Tate reflected "Funny looking at my BSA mark up overlay now Lloyd. Marker pens, Pantone swatches, photocopied bits of paper and not a computer in sight. Interestingly, this crude piece of cardboard and paper was all your printer needed to make silk screens and print off the jacket backs, ready to be painted, jewelled and stitched together with lining into the completed jackets."

The lot comprises a large illustration board featuring the final artwork for the back pattern piece; two partial design overlays used to determine the colour placement for the back BSA logo and text; and a design for the front BSA logo mounted on an illustration board. The designs are rendered in marker pen, ink and pencil, with printed and hand-drawn cut-and-paste elements on the final artwork board. Both boards are labelled "Pattern 054" along the upper edge, and the two partial designs feature handwritten annotations. Also included is a booklet about the Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter exhibition held at Chelsea Space, Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2012. The lot exhibits tape residue, minor marks, creasing and tears on the larger back logo colour-placement design. Some of the adhered elements have begun to peel away in places due to age.
