A collection of bound scripts from the production of Richard Attenborough's historical epic Gandhi. The film won eight Oscars, including for Best Picture, Director and Actor, and was nominated for a further three.
This collection comprises various scripts and other paperwork produced in the decades leading up to the film's 1982 release, including a first draft original film treatment, dated "October, 1951", featuring a handwritten inscription on the first page and the stamp of T.N. Jayavelu, a bookseller from Madras, India (now Chennai); a 229-page script credited to Gerald Hanley, dated "April 1964", and with a handwritten inscription asking to return the script to Hanley; a 176-page screenplay credited to Robert Bolt and dated "October, 1973"; a 202-page script credited to John Briley and dated "October 2nd 1980"; a post-production script dated "March, 1982" and printed on blue and pink pages; a post-production script dated "Sept. 1982" and printed in Hindi; and a "Comparison of Actual Events with Script" document, held together with a paperclip.
The scripts have wear from age and use, most notably the original film treatment, which is heavily spotted and discoloured. Most of the documents are held in custom-made hard shell boxes, made to resemble books. These were created by the current owner. Dimensions (largest) 35 cm x 23 cm x 4.5 cm (13.75" x 9" x 1.75")
