About Full Moon
Born 1951, pioneering independent filmmaker Charles Band produced his first horror film, Mansion of the Doomed, before the age of 25. By 1978, he had founded MEDA Home Entertainment, the first-ever independent home video distribution company in North America; and three years later, he again disrupted the ancillary market by forming Wizard Video, which distributed such classics as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, I Spit on Your Grave, and Lucio Fulci's Zombie. In 1983, Band expanded his already-massive repertoire as both director and writer with the founding of his production company Empire Pictures Entertainment. With as many as 12 features produced each year, Empire was responsible for several landmarks of 1980s independent cinema, including Re-Animator, From Beyond, Troll, and Robot Jox, before its shuttering in 1988.
Undeterred, Band continued producing as many as 20 features a year through his new venture, Full Moon Entertainment (later Full Moon Features). It was under this banner that the filmmaker achieved his greatest popularity with the launch of the beloved Puppet Master franchise, a genre-busting blend of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy and later the most successful direct-to-video film series of all time. Featuring hand-held puppetry and an excess of low-budget gore, the franchise birthed a massive cottage industry of 1:1 scale puppet replicas, action figures, and other merchandise collected around the globe. In 2021 - one year before the release of the 16th Puppet Master film, Doktor Death - Harper-Collins published Band's best-selling tell-all autobiography, Confessions of a Puppetmaster. Today, the maverick filmmaker continues to oversee dozens of new productions, as well as Full Moon's popular streaming channel Full Moon Features. With 50 years in the business and over 300 feature films under his belt, Band shows no signs of slowing down.
