One Sheet (27" x 41"); Style A, Stone Lithograph
Very Fine on Linen; Artwork by Karoly Grosz
Universal, 1931
This is one of only seven or eight copies known of this magnificent poster for the horror classic. This beautiful copy was previously mounted with the linen trimmed to the edges of the poster. It was recently removed from the old linen with ease and remounted with almost no touch-ups necessary.
Widely considered one of the Holy Grails of the movie poster market is this spectacular one sheet from James Whale's 1931 Universal horror classic that catapulted Boris Karloff to screen stardom. This example exhibited sporadic edge and fold wear. It was professionally linen-backed with expert touch-ups to address very small issues, and the work is outstanding, as expected for a poster of this caliber. Completely intact, this poster would be a cornerstone of any collection.
The 1931 horror classic "Frankenstein" significantly influenced the horror film genre, introducing cliches such as the mad scientist, the misunderstood monster, and angry villagers with torches. Adapted from Mary Shelley's novel, the film not only made Boris Karloff an international star but also sparked an era of cinematic monster mania. Widely regarded as the greatest Golden Age horror film, "Frankenstein" was produced during the Great Depression for $291,000 and grossed around $12 million for Universal. The film's poster features a striking image of Karloff with his iconic flat head and neck bolts, making it one of the most recognizable representations of a monster in the Twentieth Century.
Estimate: $125,000 - 250,000
