A light-up life-size Robby the Robot replica from Fred M. Wilcox's Forbidden Planet. Robby (Frankie Darro/Marvin Miller) was an assistant to Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) and his daughter Altaira Morbius (Anne Francis) and, on occasion, Commander Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and his crew as they visited the planet Altair IV.
Over the years, "Robby the Robot" has appeared in 21 films and television series, making its first appearance in Forbidden Planet and costing MGM over $125,000 to build. Known appearances include two episodes of the 1965 series Lost in Space "War of the Robots" where he was repaired by Will Robinson (Billy Mumy) and "Condemned of Space" as a guard with a freeze gun, one episode of the series Mork and Mindy "Dr. Morkenstein" as Chuck the Robot, and newer shows such as The Big Bang Theory "The Misinterpretation Agitation" as a collector's piece to Dr. Oliver Lorvis (Billy Bob Thorton). The design for Robby was created by Robert Kinoshita, who was well known for his robots during the 1950s and 1960s.
This lot consists of a Collector's Edition Robby the Robot made of a dark gray painted fiberglass body based on the parts from the original robot with stationary valves and arms, metal and acrylic detailing, a heart box with static piano keys, an oscillating star light and a quad light. Robby lights up when plugged in by the power source mounted by the feet, illuminating the star and quad lights, as well as activating audio ability from an MP3 player that connects to one of the ports in the right foot. Robby comes mounted to a clear acrylic beveled base. This lot does not feature all of the electrical components to animate the head and its lights and exhibits nonfunctioning lights in two of the quad lights and scuffing on the right arm.
