Flash Gordon and the Beastman stand together in a cave on Mongo, the great idol of Emperor Ming looming behind them, and the moment is exactly as charged as it sounds: one of the most iconic adventure heroes in comic-strip history, manacled and facing the statue of the tyrant he has come to overthrow, told by his captor that this is the god to whom he will be sacrificed.

Samuel A. Peeples' script for Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All is a proper adventure story, one that earns its stakes, and Filmation's animators understood the assignment. This is one of the scenes that makes the 1982 film feel weightier than Saturday-morning television had any right to be.
The cel setup presents both characters in full figure at 12-field, Flash bound at the wrists before the idol and the Beastman armed with his spear. The production background, a painted cave interior in deep blues and teals with the idol's form rising behind them, completes the setup as a full scene piece rather than a floating character study.

The paired drawing is where the real interest lies. Annotated throughout in blue pencil with Filmation's detailed paint call numbers, it names both characters at the top, with the scene code F6-8 / 22 and sheet number 26 legible at the foot. This is the working document that told the ink-and-paint team exactly how to render the figures, every tonal break across the skin, every shadow call, every accent line set down for whoever followed it down the line. Drawings this fully annotated, retained alongside the finished cel, are the record of how Filmation actually built a frame, and they surface far less often than finished cels alone. The official Studio Art Programme seal is present, and condition throughout is excellent.

Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All was produced partly in reaction to the success of Star Wars, and it shows in the ambition of the storytelling: a film that gave its characters moral weight, put them in genuine jeopardy, and trusted its audience to follow. A cel from the moment Flash is told he will be sacrificed to Ming's own idol is about as deep into the mythic engine of the story as production art from this film gets.
