A helmet worn by one of the Hawkmen in Mike Hodges' sci-fi adventure Flash Gordon. Faced with the destruction of Earth after a string of disasters, New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J Jones) and journalist Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are forced by Dr Hans Zarkov (Topol) to fly to the planet Mongo to investigate. Little do they know that the ruthless emperor Ming (Max von Sydow) doesn’t take kindly to guests. Can Flash defeat Ming, free Mongo and save the Earth?
The winged race from Sky City are seen throughout the movie, commanded by Prince Vultan (Brian Blessed). Made of fibreglass, the helmet was repainted for use on a subsequent theatre production and has since been painted in a green and faux-gold scheme more accurate to its colours in the film. The fibreglass is chipped and cracked in places, with the helmet missing the “scope” detail above the crown – a common fault of helmets in private hands due to the component’s fragility – but overall the piece remains in good condition.
