Universal, 1936

The character of Flash Gordon was first brought to the screen by Universal in 1936. This group features two lobby cards, one from the set that covers the entire serial in a feature version and one from "Chapter 5: The Destroying Ray." The feature version card features a fantastic image of Ming the Merciless (Charles Middleton) seated on his elaborate throne as Dale Arden (Jean Rogers) and Dr. Alexis Zarkov (Frank Shannon) listen to him while Flash Gordon (Buster Crabbe) is subdued by a robot at Ming's left. This beautiful example is unrestored in outstanding condition and displays only a very light crease in the upper left corner. The second card from Chapter 5 features Jean Rogers in another dire predicament. It is also unrestored and in outstanding condition without any issues.

"Flash Gordon" is a 1936 superhero serial film and the first on-screen adaptation of the comic strip created by Alex Raymond in 1934. It features Flash Gordon's journey to the planet Mongo to battle the evil Emperor Ming the Merciless, with key roles played by Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers, and Charles Middleton. Despite its substantial budget, the film reused sets from other Universal films, including elements from "Bride of Frankenstein," "Dracula's Daughter," "The Mummy," and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." In 1996, it was added to the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
