A beautiful original concept storyboard from the Pastoral Symphony sequence of Fantasia (1940), showing the Little Faun in motion as he scoops up a baby Pegasus mid-slide.
Nothing like Fantasia had been seen before. It was Walt Disney's most ambitious project to date marrying classical music with pure visual storytelling, but also off screen, as it employed a lot of lead female artist talents for the first time within the studio.
Sitting between story sketch and production layout, communicating movement, character energy and musical timing, this delicate drawing is rendered in soft graphite and brown pencil, with sweeping motion lines and expressive body language across both figures. The tone is playful and instinctive, matching the lightness of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, which scored this portion of the film.
Drawn on a full animation sheet with five-peg registration, this was part of the pre-animation story development process used to convey action, timing, and tone to the animation team. Story development for the sequence involved Otto Englander, Webb Smith, Erdman Penner, Joseph Sabo, Bill Peet, and George Stallings, among others. Notably, Fantasia also marked one of the first times Disney incorporated significant contributions from its growing team of female artists.
A highly expressive and historically important development drawing from one of the studio's most artistically ambitious films. Dimensions: 30.5 cm x 25.5 cm (12" x 10")
