Ash's (Ryan Ward) chainsaw from the off-Broadway production of Evil Dead The Musical. After chopping off his possessed hand, Ash modified a chainsaw to attach to his now-handless arm, enabling him to better fight against the Deadites.
Following workshop and early performances in Canada, Evil Dead The Musical opened off-Broadway at the New World Stages in New York in Fall of 2006, running through February 2007. The stage show, which was created with the blessing of both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, combined Raimi's Evil Dead and Evil Dead II into one more-unified story. The popular musical continues to be performed worldwide today, including national tours and regional productions.
This chainsaw, from the personal collection of special effects artist Tom Sullivan, is based on a Homelite XL chainsaw (just as the film chainsaws were) and consists of a red resin shell with wood and metal handles, a metal guide bar, and an internal handle. It features production-applied stage blood throughout. The chainsaw does not include a chain and the side of the shell was broken open at some point during the production, revealing where the guide bar attaches and an open slot where a small motor was removed and adhesive residue is still present. It exhibits cracking in the shell, scuffing, and paint loss from intensive use in the musical. Dimensions: 29" x 9" x 10" (73.75 cm x 23 cm x 25.5 cm)
Additional Provenance: Letter of Authenticity from Tom Sullivan.
Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000
