Cheryl Williams' (Ellen Sandweiss) sketch pad with screen-matched hand-illustrated Naturom Demonto sketch from Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. Cheryl was drawing in her sketch pad when she was suddenly possessed by evil forces and made to crudely sketch a book with a face on it, later revealed to be the Naturom Demonto. Details in the linework and the tearing of the Naturom Demonto sketch screen-match to the close-up shot of Cheryl holding up her Naturom Demonto sketch after regaining control of herself.
This red-covered Academie sketch pad, from the personal collection of special effects artist Tom Sullivan, was Sullivan's own sketchbook at the time of filming in 1979 through 1980. As such, many of its 24 paper pages feature sketches by Sullivan in pencil and ink, including science-fiction storyboards, simple diagrams, figure studies, poster ideas, fantasy and superhero characters, couples dancing, a bearded character named "Smokey," one full-color creature sketch, and more. Most notably, the sketch pad includes the screen-matched Naturom Demonto sketch that was hand-illustrated and torn by actress Ellen Sandweiss herself during filming. A preliminary Naturom Demonto sketch drawn by Sullivan to demonstrate for Sandweiss, as well as a few of Sandweiss' early unused attempts, are also included in the sketchpad. A note taped to the front of the sketch pad reads "Book of the Dead Sketchbook by Tom Sullivan Clock, Book Drawings Etc. 1979-80." The sketch pad exhibits wear from use and age, including adhesive residue, staining, tearing, and the pages coming unattached from the sketch pad.
