Justin's stunt light-up USAC spacesuit from Paul W.S. Anderson's Event Horizon. Lewis and Clark chief engineer Justin wore his personalized United States Aerospace Command spacesuit when he, Captain S. J. Miller (Laurence Fishburne), and medical technician Peters (Kathleen Quinlan) searched the Event Horizon for survivors, only for the Ensign F.M. to be sucked into a dimensional portal in the ship's core.
Event Horizon was nominated for Best Movie of 1998 by the International Horror Guild, while star Sam Neill was individually nominated for a Fangoria Chainsaw Award® for Best Actor. In the years since its release, the film has become revered as a cult classic, with Variety naming it among the greatest 100 horror films ever made.
Designed by renowned sci-fi costumer John Mollo and constructed from a variety of scientifically-based fabrics and materials, this ornately detailed stunt costume consists of a hand-painted, foam-padded helmet with lights on each side labeled "Justin 5"; an Atmostec backpack with a built-in cooling fan and a "Kontex Brava EVA Suits" decal labeled "Justin 5"; an MBD chest plate with affixed tubing; a spacesuit jacket hand-marked "Justin Double" and applied with American flag, "Lewis and Clark," and "Justin" patches; matching spacesuit pants hand-marked "Sam Neill"; a mesh tank top inset with a cooling tube; matching mesh shorts hand-marked "Tom"; spacesuit gloves; a spacesuit belt marked "DJ" with a USAC pouch hand-marked "Top DJ Double; a spacesuit belt hand-marked "Gugu 1"; a loose USAC pouch hand-marked "DJ"; and heavy-duty spacesuit boots hand-marked "Sean/Paul" on the interior, likely for actor Sean Pertwee (Smith) and stuntperson Paul Jennings.
The helmet, backpack and chest plate light-up through cables when connected to an outlet. The boots light-up with 9V batteries, illuminating the front and outside panels. This costume is intentionally and extensively distressed by production with discoloration and grime applied throughout the fabrics. It also exhibits internal stains throughout the suit from wear and paint flaking to the helmet and backpack from age. The current functionality of wiring in the helmet, backpack, and chest plate backpack remains untested.
