Ender Wiggin’s (Asa Butterfield) Salamander Flash Suit from Gavin Hood’s 2012 sci-fi adaptation, Ender’s Game. In the film, Ender is recruited to lead the International Fleet against the alien race known as Formics. Flash Suits were used during the film’s Battle Room training sequences. Features of the suit, such as the neck piece and shoulder pads, were designed to be modular, allowing a suit’s color accents to be changed depending on what army was being portrayed. Many items of this lot are components of Ender’s flash suit and were likely worn by Butterfield.

This full flash suit costume consists of a jacket, pants, balaclava, gloves, boots, green flash suit pads, yellow flash suit pads, Salamander helmet, and flash gun. The jacket is made of synthetic nylon material with a concealed zipper up the center of the chest. The jacket features no sizing information but is labelled “Ender”. The removable green pads are marked “Ender Hero”. The green neckpiece, marked “Asa”, features a removable light-up indicator on the back that can be used in the yellow neckpiece as well. The light is operated by a switch found on a battery pack which is wired to it and runs on a single AA battery (not included). The yellow flash suit pads are all marked “Ender Harness”. The pants, labeled “Ender Suit 01”, are made from the same material as the jacket and feature a bib style mesh top with black collar that is worn under the shirt. A small magnet on the right leg can be used to hold the flash gun. The pants also feature concealed clips which correspond to clips on the jacket.

The gloves are made from matching nylon and are labeled “Ender Suit 2”. The boots are constructed from a pair of Rhino shoes (US size 9) and are specifically labeled for Butterfield’s use. The Salamander helmet is made of resin with a clear acrylic visor and was cast from 3D printed master patterns specifically sized to fit the actor. The helmet separates into three different pieces; cap, visor, and jaw. The piece features a hidden switch and battery compartment to operate an internal fan as well as a remote switch labeled “Ender”, both of which remain untested. The cap and jaw are labeled “Ender/Asa” and each piece is marked with sizing information “23 S”. A dark grey balaclava, labeled “Ender #5”, is worn under the helmet and tucked into the collar.

This lot includes a production made foam mannequin cast from Asa Butterfield. Mannequins like this were created for many of the main characters to be used by the costuming department when constructing the custom tailored Flash Suits. The foam remains unpainted but for the head. The arms, one leg, and head are all removable. When fully dressed the flash suit measures 65” x 24” x 13” (165cm x 61cm x 33cm).

The included mannequin has sustained some damage from production use including damaged connectors and chips to foam. All other components of this lot remain in great, production used condition.
